PITTSBURG — Soon, the majority of Crawford County will celebrate Little Balkans Days with food, vendors dance, art and more.

The 34th annual Little Balkans Days begins Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 through Sept. 2.

Most activities are in preparation as celebrations draw near.

People are mounting their photographs for the photography contest, due at noon by September 1. One of the lucky winners will have an opportunity to have their photograph used for the following year’s buttons.

The buttons are a “ticket” to “button events.” Events include Polka dance and chicken dinner at Meadowbrook Mall, Crawford County Historical Museum events, cooking demonstrations, Kansas Crossing Casino, Miners Hall Museum scavenger hunt, quilt show, ArtForms Gallery demonstrations, Ladies of the 80s concert, Tulsa Playboys concert and shuttle transportation.

Buttons may be purchased for $5 at Celebrations by Lori, Kansas Teachers Community Credit Union, Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium, Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce and Ron’s Supermarket.

Along with preparing for photography contests, people are picking out cute outfits for the baby contest and preparing handmade crafts for demonstrations and sales, and they are most likely practicing their Polka moves for the dance.

People can visit Little  website http://littlebalkans.com/ to find a schedule of the events and more.

Vendor Coordinator Edra Meyer said there are plenty of booths still available, the deadline is Aug. 22. Booths range from $50 to $90 and vary in size, electricity is available. People interested can contact Meyer at  620-231-7561

Meyer said she encourages people to sign up if they are crafty, for example, someone who creates handmade items or repurposed furniture.

“It’s going back to the theme of what Little Balkans is all about,” Meyer said. “They made due with their hand-crafted goods.

“They can show talent not everybody gets to see everyday.”
