PITTSBURG — People can now sign-up to throw axes as a sport in Pittsburg.

Main Street Axe Company will host a ribbon cutting for an urban axe throwing arena at 1 p.m. on Saturday at 216 S. Broadway. An open house will follow with axe throwing demonstrations and cake.

Main Street Axe Co. Store Owner Michelle Fowler moved from California to Pittsburg two years ago with her husband, Ben and their children.

They bought the building once occupied by Broadway Production, with plans to lease the building, or to open a restaurant.

These plans changed after Fowler went on a trip to Chicago where she learned of axe throwing leagues.

Fowler said it is believed “urban axe throwing” began in Canada. The idea to bring axe throwing indoors spread all across North America. There’s even a World Axe Throwing League, which set the rules and regulations for safety and game play.

“People are playing all over the country,” Fowler said and added she thought it would be neat to have a league in Pittsburg.

Fowler plans to create the first Pittsburg league in the fall. She said there are opportunities for people in the league to make it WATL World Championships.

People do not have to join a league, instead they can visit for an hour and half with a group of friends. There are different options for groups and there are various types of games which are like darts, but with an axe, Fowler said.

Axe throwing indoors, Fowler said is safe. When parties show up they must sign a waiver and before they are allowed to throw axes they are trained by a coach. WATL’s standards for safety are enforced, she said.

Many urban axe throwing arenas are part of a bar, Fowler said. She said her alcohol license is currently pending.

Main Street Axe Co. is taking booked parties and will announce official hours on its Facebook page, Instagram and website at www.mainstreetaxe.com in the near future.
