PITTSBURG — St. Mary’s-Colgan continued their push in the Kansas Class 1A State Playoffs by defeating visiting Hillsboro 45-20 on Friday at Pittsburg State’s Carnie Smith Stadium.
Cade Simmons opened the game with a goal-line scramble to give Colgan an early lead. Midway in the quarter, Simmons found his favorite receiver Cal Marquardt for a 56-yard touchdown. Colgan would be stopped during their two-point attempt to hold the score at 13-0.
After another Panther stop on defense, Simmons threw his second touchdown of the half to Marquardt in the red zone. Colgan missed the extra point, making the scoreline 18-0.
Simmons added another rushing score in the second quarter, breaking through two Hillsboro tacklers on his way to a 53-yard touchdown run.
St. Mary’s-Colgan built a 31-0 lead heading into halftime.
Simmons continued his assault on Hillsboro in the third quarter. Up 31-6, Simmons barrelled in for a touchdown from 4 yards out.
Simmons added his fourth rushing touchdown, his sixth total for the game, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Panthers.
St. Mary’s-Colgan will host Jackson Heights at home on Friday. Jackson Heights(9-1) defeated Blue Rapids 35-20 in their Regional matchup.
