Kansas court officials still worry they'll be forced to furlough employees next year.

They say requiring workers to take unpaid leave will result in larger paperwork backlogs and could delay some trials.

Kansas Supreme Court spokesman Ron Keefover tells The Topeka Capital-Journal that furloughs would have a devastating effect on the pace of justice.

The Supreme Court estimates it faces an $8 million shortfall in its current budget. The court already has drafted a plan to have workers take six weeks of unpaid leave from February through June, if necessary.

Gov. Mark Parkinson and legislators have pledged to find the money for the courts to prevent furloughs. But Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Davis said he's not yet counting on getting the funds.
