A Sumner County athlete has been nominated to play in one of the nation's biggest high school football all-star games; he is also the sole nominee from Kansas.

Tanner Wood, junior, of Conway Springs High School has been selected as one of the Country's top 400 high school players, The top 90 from that group will be invited to play in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The list of nominees was announced yesterday.

"I thought it was great to be recognized, and that it was an amazing honor," Wood said. Conway Springs is preparing to defend their 3A State Title during Wood's senior season, after beating Silver Lake in Nov. 2011. Having players in the limelight not unfamiliar territory at Conway Springs

"We're really excited for Tanner, and also for our school," Head Football Coach Matt Biehler said. "We think if you can get somebody that listed in your state, that's very humbling. But when you get somebody that's listed at the top of the whole nation, that's exceptional." Caleb Handy, Conway Springs class of 2004, was invited to and played in the Army All-American bowl a few years ago. He went on to play football at Kansas State (K-State)University; Wood says he has verbally committed to being a K-State Wildcat as well.

Wood has already received an invite to play in another all-star game, the 2013 All-American Offense-Defense Bowl. If he is invited to the Army All-American Bowl, he will have a tough choice to make as both games take place on the same weekend.

"That just shows they type of kid he is," Biehler said. "On some of their criteria is leadership, and character, and Tanner exemplifies those things." The next step for the nominees occurs in September, when the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Tour begins. Selections for the game will be announced throughout next fall, with the Selection Tour ending in early December.

“This nomination recognizes the mental, emotional and physical strengths, and leadership qualities, Wood possesses both on and off the field; qualities he shares with Army Strong Soldiers," said Bruce Jasurda, Chief Marketing Officer, U.S. Army. "The Army congratulates all of the athletes on their nomination.”

The Army All-American Bowl will take place on Jan. 5, 2013. Current National Football League (NFL) stars that played in the game include Adrian Perterson, Andrew Luck, and Tim Tebow. For Wood, this is one step closer to realizing his dream.

"I've been trying to work as hard as I can, and do everything the coaches tell me to do to get better," he said. "This has been something I've always wanted to do..."
