The official ceremony took place in the school auditorium, but it was during the informal breakfast that followed in the library when Lakeside Elementary students got a close-up look at the veterans they were honoring on Wednesday.
In recognition of Veterans Day, the Lakeside K-Kids gave a special salute to local veterans Wednesday morning during a presentation that included a history of Veterans Day, reading of poems and singing of patriotic songs. The host students also gave each veteran a chance to be recognized by asking them to stand for applause.
Babs Tims, Lakeside K-Kids sponsor and longtime Lakeside teacher, said the students deserve all of the credit for conducting the ceremony.
“What they wanted to do today is honor you, veterans, for your service,” she said. “This is their program. This is what they want to do.”
Noah Vaughn, Lakeside K-Kids member, said the students hoped to portray during the ceremony their deep appreciation for the veterans and their devotion to the United States.
“We wanted to let veterans know how much we appreicate all they do to serve our country,” he said.
Following the formal ceremony, the hosts and their veteran guests gathered in the new library for breakfast. Between bites, however, the many veterans in attendance took turns introducing themselves and saying a few words about their military experience. It was a diverse group, with one man telling of his days fighting in World War II, while another said he was preparing to fight in the current war in Afghanistan. Vietnam veterans were present, as were veterans of both Iraq wars.
