Elder abuse
Kansas Area Agencies on Aging will present training on elder abuse from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Homer Cole Community Center, 3003 N. Joplin. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.
There is a $30 fee for the presentation, which is a six-hour training that will focus on elder abuse, information on the challenges of intervention, the value of multi-disciplinary approaches and recent research on elder abuse.
Participants will learn about the dynamics of abuse, the role of power and control, indicators of abuse, neglect and exploitation. Lunch will be served. Anyone needing additional information may call the center at 231-9773.
PATH
PATH meeting for June will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Girard High School auditorium.
The program on “Making Healthy Food Choices” will be presented, with advice, by Peggy Kramer, licensed registered dietitians. The program is sponsored by the Senior Behavioral Health department at Girard Medical Center.
Blood pressure checks will be available and refreshments will be served. The program will be open to all area senior adults. Registration fee is $1.
Kiwanis Club
Pittsburg Kiwanis Club will meet at noon in dePaul Hall, Via Christi Hospital. Don Smith will present the program on the bicycle ministry at Pittsburg State University.
Vicki Palmer will be greeter and Jack Payne will serve as cashier. Sharon Barone will give the invocation.
Girard USD 248
GIRARD — Girard USD 248 Board of Education will meet at 4 p.m. at the Board of Education office for a special board meeting. Purpose will be discussion of non-elected personnel.
The board will also have a regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the office, which will include discussion on summer maintenance as well as an executive session for the purpose of meet and confer and non-elected personnel.
Franklin Farmers/Crafters
FRANKLIN — Franklin Farmers/Crafters market will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Franklin Community Park, located on Highway 69 Business, six miles north of Pittsburg.
Products available will include a variety of garden vegetables, farm fresh eggs, plants, canned vegetables such as pickled okra, pies, cookies and breads and hand-crafted items such as kitchen towels and rags, baby hats and blankets, candles, soaps, rustic wood products, crocheted items, hand-made jewelry and more.
Vendors may set up for free, but must register in advance by calling 620-249-4258 or e-mailing franklinkansas@yahoo.com. A limited number of spaces are available under the park shelter. Each space under the shelter will be provided with a picnic table.

Elks dinner
Dinner will be served at Pittsburg Elks Lodge No. 412. Carry-out orders may be picked up at 5:30 p.m., and those wishing to dine in should be there at 6 p.m.
Menu will feature pork steak, baked potato, green beans, salad, dessert and coffee or tea. Cost will be $10 per person.
Arma Homecoming
ARMA — Arma VJ Homecoming Committee will meet at 7 p.m. at the Arma Community Center.
All persons involved in working on the 2012 homecoming may attend, along with anyone who wishes to help with planning for the event. The 2012 Arma VJ Homecoming will be held Aug. 17, 18 and 19.

Frontenac American Legion Post 43 will sponsor bingo from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Frontenac Senior Citizens Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
Downtown music
Downtown music night, open free to the community, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Europe Park.
Phi Kappa Chapter
Phi Kappa Chapter, Phi Tau Omega sorority, will have a monthly business session at 7 p.m. at Carrington House with Jan Lemert and Jennifer Morris as hostesses,
Election of chapter officers for the upcoming year will be conducted and installation of the new officers will be discussed. Party plans will be finalized for the Saturday luncheon to be held at the national convention, scheduled June 28-July 1 in Tulsa, Okla.
All members are asked bring canned foods or paper items for Safehouse in observance of “Shower a Shelter.” This is in conjunction with the philanthropic projects of the sorority’s national president.
