Masonite, an exterior door and glass insert company, announced Friday that it would be expanding its Pittsburg facilities.
The company currently employs 135 people in Pittsburg, and after the expansion, the number is expected to climb up to around 200 jobs.
"We are excited about the Masonite expansion," said Mark Turnbull, Pittsburg director of economic development. "The impact of the additional jobs is greatly needed by our community. The recession has been difficult; however, with resilient employers like Masonite, we are bouncing back."
This will be the second investment in Masonite’s Pittsburg facilities within the last three to four years. In 2008, Masonite moved the glass insert line from Toronto, Canada. By 2011, the company had made purchases from the city of Pittsburg, expanding its total square footage to 310,000.
The additional jobs will be almost entirely manufacturing jobs and will include work on an exterior door similar to current products.
“Obviously, this is an opportunity to take people looking for these types of employment, and placing them with a well-known, established employer,” Turnbull said. “There will be an impact on the unemployment rate, especially for those looking for manufacturing jobs for some time.”
Turnbull said this move is an example of a company investing not just in their own facilities, but in the city, as well.
"Our businesses compete globally. One of the major advantages we have is the productivity of the community’s and region's workforce," Turnbull said. "We are certainly proud of the competitive superiority of the Pittsburg manufacturing segment. "Our university, community colleges and employers produce the highes quality of workforce. We couldn't be more proud of our existing employers and look forward to a positive growth in 2012."
In a press release, Turnbull and city officials identified some of the challenges facing the community with the Masonite expansion. Included in those challenges are the storage and availability of products and improved traffic flow, which the release said have already been in discussion for months with local and state officials.
Masonite products are distributed to the Southwest, Southeast and East Coast, but can also be purchased locally at Broadway Lumber Company in Pittsburg.
Turnbull said he believes the company has already begun the expansion, and he is hoping that people interested in those jobs will apply.
