Dave Hensley was elected potentate of Mirza Shrine Temple during the annual meeting held on Jan. 18.
Dinner, prepared by Mirza Chefs, was served at 6:15 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. In charge were Mike Carnes, Mirza chaplain, and Roger Doue, ritualistic director, assisted by Tom McAdam and Francis Demott, both past potentates.
Les Thomas, 2011 potentate, presided over the business session. Annual finance and membership reports were presented by Jerry Waltrip, treasurer, and Paul Uttley, temple recorder and past potentate.
Election of officers followed, with a public installation of officers after the election. Presiding over the installation was Jack Overman, senior past potentate, assisted by Randy Vogts and Jerry James, both past potentates. Many Shrine members and their ladies attended.
Hensley was appointed as Mirza outer guard in 2004 by Potentate Jerry James, Arcadia. He was raised a Master Mason in 1990 in Prudence Lodge No. 11, Columbus. He served twice as worship master and for the last several years as served as treasurer. In 2008 Hensley served as a district deputy grand master of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Kansas. He was chairman of the Child Identification Program at Prudence Lodge for several years.
Hensley became a noble of Mirza Shrine in 1992 and is active in Mirza C.K. Clowns. He also holds membership in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Fort Scott, and is past patron of Pursel Chapter No. 110, Order of the Eastern Star.
He is married to Grace, Mirza’s new first lady, and has three sons and eight grandchildren.
The new potentate’s slogan is “Helping Kids Get Well in 2012.”
In addition to the potentate, Mirza Shrine Temple elected the following officers; Jim Kepley, chief rabban; David Smith, assistant rabban; Joe Gregory, high priest and prophet; Johnny Cummings, oriental guide; Jerry Waltrip, treasurer; Paul Uttley, past potentate, recorder; and executive committee members Randy Vogts and David Titus, both past potentates.
Appointments made by Hensley were: Ron Venus, first ceremonial master; Mike Hamman, second ceremonial master; Mark Spellman, director; Randy Ervin, marshal; Mike Carnes, captain of the guard; Rick Horn, outer guard; and William “Buck” Fischer, chaplain.
Rick Horn, Colony, grew up in Iola. After graduating from high school he attended Allen County Community College and Pittsburg State University, studying mechanical design engineering. He relocated to Colony in 1994. He has worked in the machining/manufacturing industry, then transitioned into the oil and transportation industry in 2000. He has owned and operated Rick’s Halfway House Saloon in Colony since 1999.

Horn was raised a Master Mason in Delphian Lodge No. 44, Garnett, in 2006. He served as master in 2010 and is currently senior deacon. He attained his 32nd degree in the Valley of Fort Scott in 2007 and is active as a member of the stage crew.
He “walked the hot sands of the desert” at Mirza in 2007 and since that time has been active in the Oriental band, Hardly Able Fire Department, Linn County and Tri-County, serving in many officers.
He has three children, Noble Dereck Caudell, Kelcey Caudell and Brittany Horn, who is a member of Azrim Temple No. 81, Daughters of the Nile. He also has a granddaughter, Kylie.
Horn’s hobbies include working in the Masonic bodies, having fun with family and friends, golfing and shooting sporting clays.
Mike Carnes served as Mirza chaplain in 2011. He graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1971, from Fort Scott Community College in 1973 and from Pittsburg State University in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Since his graduation he has worked in the family business, making products for the granite monument industry.
Carnes was raised a Master Mason in Rising Sun Lodge No. 8, Fort Scott, in 1976, serving as worshipful master. He also attended the 32nd degree at the Valley of Fort Scott in 1976. He was coronated as a 33rd degree Mason in 1999.
He is also a member of the York Rite, Olive Chapter No. 13, Order of the Eastern Star, the Red Cross of Constantine and the Order of Quetzacoatl. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fort Scott.
Carnes and his wife, Susan, have two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica.
Mirza Temple trustees are Wes Cobb, J.D. Messenger and Stan Jahay, past potentate.
Hensley also made the appointments of Troy Glasgow as his chief aide, and Mike cotter and Gerald Gillming as co-assistant chief aides. Larry Nelson, Chanute, was appointed as Mirza Hospital representative.
Following the election and installation, the C.K. Clowns hosted a reception in honor of the new potentate and first lady.
