Plenty are slots are still available for the 2009 12th Annual Girard Christmas Parade.
This year’s parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.
The annual parade, which officially kicks off the Christmas season in Girard, is conducted each year by the Girard Fire Department. Fire Chief Dustin Johnson said Tuesday that entries will be accepted until noon on Dec. 3. And with the parade just two weeks away, Johnson is urging anyone interested in participating in the popular event to sign up.
“We honestly could use a lot more entries,” he said.
The annual parade, which draws hundreds of spectators each year, will begin at Fourth and Ozark streets and traverse completely around the city square. Johnson said the parade “gets a little bigger” each year, but the size often depends on the weather.
Following the parade, “Santa Claus” will visit the Girard Fire Station to take pictures with families.
“That’s always a big hit with the kids,” Johnson said.
Because the fire department provides its own Santa, those entering the parade are encouraged not to use a Santa Claus character in the float to avoid “confusing the younger children.”
The Girard Fire Department conducts the parade each year with the help of local Girard businesses, which donate money to help pay the winners of the parade float contest. Prizes will be awarded immediately after the parade.
