A longtime Pittsburg landmark was damaged by fire late Tuesday night.

The Pittsburg Fire Department responded to a report of flames at the building that formerly was home to Hornback’s Posey Shop, at the intersection of Sixth and Walnut Streets, at about 11:09 p.m., Battalion Chief Jeff Kavanagh said. The building sustained significant fire damage to the attic, and smoke and water damage to the ground level. The department responded with 10 men, three trucks and the fire chief, and returned to the station at around 1:43 a.m.

Kavanagh said there was a possibility the building could be salvaged, but that it probably is damaged beyond repair.

“I would say it probably is,” he said. Owner Carol Hornback declined to comment on the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Kavanagh said. But Lori Binson, who lives across the street from the building and made the call to the fire department, said she thinks it was caused by fireworks.

“It was a pretty big ordeal,” Binson said. “We were just getting home and saw a two foot blaze on back side of the building ... It’s scary, because it just as easily could have been my house. With how hot and dry it’s been, people need to be careful.”
