The lower level of Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium was filled with princesses, dragons and ninjas Friday evening. Elvis even made an appearance.
All were attending the Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Halloween Spook-Tacular.
“We’ll probably have about 300 kids coming through the door,” said Sara Mitchell, recreation superintendent for the City of Pittsburg. “We’ve got a costume contest, five different games, a Halloween coloring contest, arts and crafts, a bounce house, a ‘not-so-scary’ room and a haunted maze.”
Youngsters also receive candy from M&I Bank, and had a chance to meet Scooby-Doo and Goofy. Those attending also were given free tickets to the Pittsburg State University Theatre production of “The Jungle Book,” held upstairs on the auditorium main stage.
“This is a fantastic thing for the kids, and we come every year,” said Alan Kirby, Pittsburg, who came with Sam, 9, Katie, 6, and Paige, 5.
Paige, wearing a Spongebob Squarepants shirt, pulled her father toward the games.
“I want to go to the bean bag toss,” she said. “But I don’t want to go to the spooky ones.”
“You do have to pay to get in, but you get coupons, so you’re really still ahead,” said Jonna Gabbert, attending with her husband, Chris, and three children.
The youngest, Zander, just turned 1, so he was a little too young for the games.
“But he’s having a great time pointing at everything,” Gabbert said.
Tyler Schartz, 3, especially enjoyed meeting Goofy, but had to spend some time competing in the costume contest.
Dressed as Elvis, he received second place for the most original costume in his age category.
“He wanted to be a lion, but it’s hard to find a lion outfit, and this was the cutest option,” said his father, Chad Schartz. “He’s keeping those sunglasses on better than I thought he would.”
He said that Tyler came last year as a guitar.
“It’s kind of weird,” Schartz said. “Last year he was a guitar, and this year he’s a singer. Last year I brought him by myself because my wife, Crystal, works the night shift at the hospital. She still does, but this year she got the night off and came along.”
Sisters Marlee Stout, 3, and Andee Stout, 1, took first place in the most original category. Marlee was Little Bo Peep, and Andee was her sheep. They are the daughters of Andrew and Jenna Stout, Pittsburg.
“This is our second year to come to Spook-Tacular,” their mother said. “Marlee was a geisha last year, and Andee hadn’t been born yet.”
Volunteers from Pittsburg State University and the Pittsburg High School Key Club assisted city workers with the event.
