For one afternoon, Pittsburg’s Golden Livingcenter turned into the set of Jeopardy, as Pittsburg State students peppered the residents with trivia questions as part of a visit from the newly formed Kansas Corps.
Several volunteers from Pittsburg State’s Kansas Corps went to Golden Livingcenter to ask trivia, read stories, and make jewelry with the residents.
“The director of Kansas Corps in Fort Hays State set this up so we can come here and do this,” said Brittney Squire, management junior and Kansas Corps leader. “During the holidays, some of the residents don’t get a lot of visitors, so we thought this would be a perfect time to come out and help.”
This is the first semester for Kansas Corps to be an active group on the Pittsburg State campus.
“This is the first year for it, so we’re among the first group of leaders,” Squire said. “They tried to get the funding for it for several years. It’s a group that has a statewide impact.”
Squire has been one of the students who’ve been impacted by the program. She’s seen the group do plenty of work around the state.
“We went to Greensburg and helped out the elderly with their landscaping and mulch work. We arranged one guy’s garage,” Squire said. “We also went to the youth development center and did some painting.”
There are other Kansas Corps events planned, including a celebration of Kansas Day set for January and a traveling dentist group coming to Independence in April.
“We’re just a pool of students that were brought together to benefit Kansas communities,” Squire said. “We want to instill service into our generation. There are needs in every Kansas community and we want to make a difference.”
