CRC provides
Mother’s Day basket

The Crisis Resource Center continued this year its annual Mother’s Day basket giveaway. The event, now in its third year, serves as a fundraiser for the Safehouse CRC.

Proceeds from the sale of $1 chances help fund the programs provided by the CRC. Maureen Huerter, vice president of the CRC Board of Directors, said the fundraiser usually brings in between $500 and $1,000.

This year’s recipient of the basket, a Pittsburg resident, asked to remain anonymous. The basket, made possible by various sponsors, included a variety of products and gift certificates from area businesses. The drawing was held May 10.

The CRC would like to say a special thank you to Drew Rhodes, store manager at Ron’s Supermarket; Judy Dougan, Decorum; Corey Matlock, Attractions Salon; Casey Mekkaoui, Attractions Salon; The Little Shop of Flowers and The Corner Bistro.

National Community Action Month

In honor of National Community Action Month, a commemoration held every May to highlight the antipoverty work of Community Action Agencies across the country, SEK-CAP hosted their annual Volunteer Banquet and Staff Appreciation Day events.

The Volunteer Banquet was held at Memorial Auditorium in Pittsburg, and honored individuals who had contributed over 100 hours of volunteer time. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to each volunteer along with gift bags and dolls, which were donated by a longtime SEK-CAP corporate partner and provider of early childhood education materials.  Everyone enjoyed a dinner of fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, and green beans catered by Girard Chicken Annie’s.

The national office of the Community Action Partnership designates May as National Community Action Month to recognize the work of Community Action Agencies that are fighting poverty on the local level.  Each year, Community Action agencies help 13 million Americans escape poverty.  SEK-CAP serves twelve counties in Southeast Kansas by providing an array of programs, including the Head Start/Early Head Start programs, an emergency shelter for families, intensive case management, public transportation services, weatherization services, and affordable and subsidized housing.
