The seventh annual “Paint The Town Red” celebration begins today, and organizers are excited about this year’s version of the annual Pittsburg State University school spirit fest.
“This year we really are taking it to that proverbial next level,” said Blake Benson, president of the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the festival, along with the university and Mpix during the week before the first home football game.
This year PTTR added a residential decorating competition to go along with its school and business contests, as well as a barbecue competition. Judging for the school competitions begins today, and the deadline to enter the business decorating contest is 4:30 p.m. today. Also new this year is the community favorite award. Benson said Pitsco is this year’s presenting sponsor for the school contest.
“Businesses put this on their calendar weeks and months in advance to prepare for this,” Benson said. “We’re really excited for it this year because we know it’s going to be the best Paint The Town Red yet. It shows an impressive amount of creativity from the businesses and students, and it shows what an impressive amount of support this community has for the university.”
At Community National Bank & Trust, Jason Hurt and Larron Harrison of Patterson Artworks were busy Tuesday afternoon painting Gus the Gorilla on the front windows. Hurt said it’s a good week to be a painter.
“We do this every year,” Hurt said. “And we’ve got quite a few locations this year.”
