On Friday, Kansas GOP gubernatorial candidate Sam Brownback continued to tout his “Road Map for Kansas” plan by singling out the Flint Hills.

During a stop in Council Grove, Brownback said that state economic growth could be helped by “cultivating the potential for tourism in the Flint Hills.”

Brownback said that developing hiking, biking and horseback riding trails throughout the region and reaching out to private groups to assist the state in developing new ways for visitors to “truly experience the Flint Hills” were tops on the priority list.

“The increased volume in visitors will provide additional opportunities for the area,” Brownback said.

“Private partners will be more interested in investing in Central Kansas. And as local communities from Marysville to Sedan and Emporia to Abilene continue to invest in facilities and experiences to attract tourists, the state of Kansas should turn our attention to connecting these points of interest.”

Brownback also said that developing wind energy in the Flint Hills area of Kansas was vital to the state’s economy.

“The potential for the production of wind energy in Kansas is strong and I support it elsewhere. However, allowing it to develop here would be giving up something too precious,” Brownback said.

In 2009, approximately 20,000 tourists visited the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve site.  Brownback said as governor, his goal will be to increase that number to 50,000.

Seth Bundy, spokesman for Brownback’s opponent, state Sen. Tom Holland of Baldwin City, said that he was glad to see Brownback take notice of local efforts already underway to attract tourists to Kansas.

“Though it’s disappointing that Brownback opposed, and his running mate voted against, the balanced budget that supports many of these projects,” Bundy said. “We need a leader who will work with stakeholders to move Kansas forward, not oppose their efforts and then try to take credit for their success during a brief campaign stop. Pledging hollow support may work well in Washington, but it won’t help Kansas.”

NOTE: In addition to the stop in Morris County, the senator also campaigned in Wabaunsee, Chase, Marion, McPherson and Harvey counties.
