Travis and Jasmine Berger are restoring the home Travis grew up in at 805 N. Locust. The Bergers constructed their own siding, and are renovating the house “down to the weights on the window ropes,” he said.

Travis Berger said he was thrilled to be chosen as one the June winners of the Pittsburg Beautiful award.

Berger and his wife, Jasmine, who live at 805 N. Locust, have almost completely renovated their home, which Travis grew up in and was built in 1930. Jasmine said Travis did most of the work, but Travis said he thinks she was just being modest.

“It’s a great feeling, but I’ve got to put some of the award to her,” he said. “She put just as much work into it as me. We counted up the hours and we each had the same amount.”

The project is a complete remodeling effort. The Berger’s replaced bad siding — they made the replacement slats themselves — all of the windows, added a new roof, new screens, and rebuilt the front porch, including the pillars, from the frame up. They’re tackling the interior as well, including the kitchen, basement and their bedroom.

“Right down to the weights on the window ropes,” Travis said, adding that there are three rooms left to redo.

They started last year and completed three sides of the house before winter set in, Jasmine said.

Travis grew up in the house. It was bought by an acquaintance for a time, and the Berger’s purchased it back 10 years ago.

“It’s a great honor to see the sign in the front yard,” Travis said, adding Jasmine has allowed him to sleep in the day the award committee presented the sign. “I hope I get to talk to them when they come to get it.”

A block away, the new Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church rectory at 10th and Locust won the award the typically goes to a business. Father Adam Keiter said the parish relished the award.

“It certainly is an honor to be recognized for doing a small part to help keep Pittsburg beautiful,” Keiter said. “But the credit really goes to the parishioners. They’re the ones that made this possible, and their generosity is what made helped make it so beautiful. We look forward to continuing that work.”

The other residential winner, Paul Lemert, who lives at 503 Hobson Place, was not available for comment.
