Hundreds of students and community members gathered in John Lance Arena Sunday night for Pittsburg State University’s annual Air Band and Greek God/Goddess competition.
Typically held as the culmination of Greek Week, organizers changed the event to a kickoff celebration because of scheduling conflicts, Greek Week chair Rheon Sanders said.
Each of the six fraternities and three sororities put their lip synching and drag costuming skills on display for the spectators after weeks — months, in some cases — of preparation. Each house puts together a skit for Air Band and Greek God and Goddess
This year’s theme was the 1990s, and the goofy skits were based primarily around popular music and TV shows from that decade. The atmosphere was silly and carefree, but competition was still fierce; the title of Greek Week champion could hinge on a performance – points earned during the contest will be added to points the houses earn for activities throughout the week – and the teams laid it all on the line during their performances.
“The first place team gets trophies and points,” Sanders said. “There also are the bragging rights, of course.”
This year’s event also differed in that the winners of the contest were announced shortly afterward – in years past, participants had to wait several days before the winners were announced. The contestants were entirely comfortable in their get ups, and each made a strong case for the title, with well-choreographed dance moves. The crowd could sense the fun they were having as well, and responded in kind.
“We’ve been working on it for the past two months,” said Alpha Sigma Alpha sophomore Deandra Sexton – her sorority won the Greek Goddess award. “The music was all based off what we wanted to use, but we also had to choose songs based off what was already taken. We wanted a good mix.”
Sexton said the event also was a chance to show off for friends, and maybe have a little something to good-naturedly lord over friends in other houses.
“It’s definitely a competition,” Sexton said. “But it’s also just a fun thing for the houses to do as well.”
