Bob Kmiec tends to lean back in his seat during Crawford County Commission meetings. After Tuesday’s election, he can continue leaning back.
Kmiec was re-elected as the District 1 County Commissioner by a large margin over challenger Larry Brunetti. Kmiec, the Republican incumbent, received 2,625 votes (63 percent) to Democrat Brunetti’s 1,530 votes (36.7 percent).
“I’m really very happy,” Kmiec said. “It’s not about me or Larry. It’s about the people of the First District. It’s for them. I’ll get the message out that we’ll continue working on the budget and keeping things in line. I truly, truly appreciate the people’s support.”
On the other hand, Brunetti said he would return to his duties as a county employee on the road and bridge crew for District 2.
“I’m not really surprised. I ran a good race,” Brunetti said. “I thought we could do some changes and do some things. I’m a little disappointed in the results. I tried to get my ideas out there, and hopefully some of my ideas will make it through.”
Kmiec said the results showed the will of the people, and what the people want is to continue forward movement.
“It shows the people really want to see us make progress. They don’t want negativity,” he said. “They want us working in a positive direction. I want their input. I’m always glad to do what the people want.”
Brunetti said he hopes some of his ideas, including hiring a county manager and a county engineer are picked up by the members of the county commission.
“I will go back to work for the county. I enjoy my job and I will continue doing it,” Brunetti said. “I thought there were some things wrong with the county, and I’ll give my ideas on that and explain what I know about the county to the commissioners. Hopefully, the ideas I’ve planted will stick, and it will do things for the county.”
Kmiec said that he is glad the election is over.
“It’s a long election process,” Kmiec said. “Everybody is probably relieved it’s over with. I hope people will continue to call me. My number’s in the phone book, so they can express their opinions any time. I appreciate everyone’s support.”
