JP Custom Smoke, Wichita, was winner of the People’s  Choice Award at the Smokin’ Hot BBQ and Fireworks event Saturday at the Crawford County Fairgrounds.

There were 33 barbecue cooks in the overall competition, which was sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. However, the People’s Choice Award was a separate part of the event, and conducted by the Celebrate Girard! Committee.

A total of 18 teams choice to compete in it, and the committee provided the meat they cooked.
The public sampled the meat and voted to select the winner, who received $400.

“We thank everybody who helped make this event such a big success,” said Christy Vulgamore, committee chairman.
