Fort Scott’s Good Ol’ Days may cover one less day this year, but those attending won’t miss any of their favorite activities.

“We won’t have anything scheduled on Sunday, but we’ve packed everything into Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” said Janet Braun, a member of the Good Ol’ Days Committee.

Fort Scott Idol, based on the popular “American Idol” TV program, will kick off activities at 6 p.m. today in Fort Scott Memorial Hall. Kale Nelson and Larry Gazaway will serve as emcees, with around 30 entrants registered to compete. Several previous Idol winners are also scheduled to  perform.

Tickets for Fort Scott Idol are $3.

The headline event this year will be DockDogs, the independent governing and sanctioning body for regional dog jumping performance sport for dogs.

“We’ll have DockDogs both Friday and Saturday,” Braun said. “Registration will be at 8 a.m., and then the waves start at 9 a.m., which is what they call the competition.”

A 40-foot dock will be set up with a 40-foot pool filled with 27,000 gallons of water.

“The owner tries to entice the dog to jump into the water, and it’s fun to watch,” Braun said. “We’ll have bleachers so people can come and watch.”

Anyone can register a dog for the competition. The only rules are that the dog must be at least six months old and the handler must be at least 7.

Festival parade will be at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by wiener dog races at 7:30 p.m.

“Again, the owner tries to entice the dog to race instead of doing whatever it wants to do,” Braun said.

Concluding the evening will be street dances from 8 to 11 p.m. The main dance, at Wall and Main, will feature music by Joe Giles and the Homewreckers.

“There will also be a dance for teens at First and Main, and Jeff Hull will be the DJ for that,” Braun said.

And then there’s Saturday, which will be full of activities for all ages.

“Do I have to talk about everything that’s going on Saturday?” Braun asked, before taking a deep breath and launching off into the list, which includes another day of DockDogs and sporting events such as dragoon races at Fort Scott High School, a softball tournament at Ellis Park and girls fast pitch at Fisher Park.

No festival is complete without a baby contest, and the Good Ol’ Days event will be at 10 a.m. in Fort Scott Memorial Hall. Registration will start at 9 a.m.

“We’ll have a car and motorcycle show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Wall and Scott,” Braun said. “We’ll also have a carnival Friday night and all day Saturday and a swap meet with flea market type items from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be arts and crafts booths and food booths up and down Main all day Saturday.”

Also featured Saturday will also be lots of live entertainment, with stages set up at  First and at Wall.

"The ‘Red Garter’ shows will be at the Scottish Rite Temple,” Braun said. “They’re saloon-type shows with dancing girls and singing bartenders.”

Fort Scott Dance, a dance competition, will be held at 5 p.m. in Fort Scott Memorial Hall. Music will include bluegrass and Left to Paradise, a Christian praise band. For youngsters, Big Red the Clown will make balloon animals at First and Main, and also perform shows at the Heritage Park Pavilion.

Street dances will wrap up the festivities from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday. Disco Dick and the Mirror Balls will perform 1970s and 1980s rock at Wall, and 92.5 KSYN will provide music for the teen dance.
