PITTSBURG —

The National Association of Letter Carriers will be collecting nonperishable food items on Saturday for distribution to the Wesley House, Safe House, Salvation army and Christ Community Church.
The letter carriers ask that residents place a food donation by their mailbox Saturday, and their letter carrier will be by that day to pick it up and deliver it to the appropriate food bank.
“We have 19 city routes and 6 rural routes that will be picking up food in the Pittsburg and Frontenac area,” said Jeremy Kellogg, NALC food drive coordinator and USPS letter carrier. “All of the food donations received will stay locally and be given to our local food banks to be distributed to  the needy. Please help us to help our community.
“I believe that this is one of the greatest privileges that God has given us to do in order to be his hands, so to speak,” Kellogg said. “One time a year, God allows the NALC and the managing officials of the USPS to agree that hungry mouths need fed. It is as simple as that. I think that we would all agree that starving people, not only throughout the world, but right here in our community, need fed.”
Kellogg said that agreement was only half of the battle. The other half, he said, was taking action. Last year, the community took up the second part, bringing in more than 8,000 pounds of food locally. Nationally, the drive raised 70.7 million pounds of food. The drive, over 16 years, has brought in 836.2 million pounds of food nationally.
“We need  our community to step out more than ever before on that same day to fulfill this blessing in other peoples lives,” Kellogg said. “Thanks to everyone taking time to this starving factor in our community.”
