Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center is continuing its fight against cancer by offering free prostate exams on Wednesday and Friday.
The exams take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday at Dr. Talaat Yaghmour’s office. Dr. Elias Tawil will perform exams from 1-3 p.m. on Friday at Mt. Carmel Regional Cancer Center.
“More than 185,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States this year alone, making it the second most common form of cancer among American men,” says Karen Wells Director of Mt. Carmel’s Regional Cancer Center. “A screening takes just a few minutes of your time but it could save your life.”
One’s chances of having prostate cancer rise rapidly after the age of 50, but although age is one of the highest risk factors, it’s not the only one.
“African-American men and those who have a history of prostate cancer in their family are placed at a much higher risk,” says Elias Tawil, MD, urologist on staff at Mt. Carmel. “Any man can be affected though, which is why annual exams are so important.”
Like any form of cancer the key to survival is early detection.
“The earlier you’re able to detect prostate cancer the better your chances of stopping the disease before it spreads,” explains Mt. Carmel Urologist Dr. Talaat Yaghmour. “Starting at age 40 men should receive annual rectal exams but once you hit 50 you should also have your blood tested for a prostate-specific antigen (PSA). These are simple tests that take just a few minutes of your time.”
The screenings are free but appointments are needed to be scheduled in advance. Persons may call 235-7900 to schedule an appointment. Space is limited.
