Several local P.E.O. chapter members were among more than 250 delegates attending the 109th annual convention of Kansas State Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, held June 3-5 in Wichita.
Attending were Sally DuMoss of Chapter BG, Girard, and Pat Jones of Chapter CJ, Mary Lewark of Chapter CP, Ann Elliott and Ronda Ison of Chapter AQ and Kristina Taylor of Chapter IO, all of Pittsburg.
Theme of the convention was “Destination P.E.O.” Presiding was Jeanette Mooney, Kansas State Chapter president, of Chapter JB, Paola. Program included an address by Patricia Brolin-Ribi, vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of the P.E.O. Foundation, election and installation of state officers and a “Golden Girl” luncheon honoring 50-year members.
Founded in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College, P.E.O. is a philanthropic educational organization with local chapters across the United States and Canada. Its mission is to promote educational opportunities for women.
The international organization supports six philanthropies. They are the P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund, Cottey College for women in Nevada, Mo., P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund, P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education, P.E.O. Scholar Awards and P.E.O. STAR Scholarship.
In addition to these projects, Kansas State Chapter also supports Sunflower Grants, which provides one-time grants to any Kansas resident who is in need of financial assistance and may be unable to secure help from other sources, and Kansas Cottey College Scholarships for Kansas women attending Cottey College.
During the 2010-2011 year, the 266 Kansas P.E.O. chapters gave more than $241,000 to state and international projects.
