Getting ready for a road game is never easy.
Just ask Scott Broyles.
The Pittsburg State University athletic department equipment manager scrambled all day Friday in preparation for the football team’s departure Friday afternoon for their season-opener at Edmond, Okla. against Central Oklahoma.
“Today was an early day because it’s the first game and it takes time to get all the stuff around,” Broyles said.
Activities during the day of a road trip consist of checking out jerseys and pants, getting shoes for players, fixing helmets, and making sure that players and coaches have the appropriate gear for their trip.
Since most of the PSU football team road games involve overnight trips, that can make the process a little more interesting.
“There is just more involved in an overnight trip like this,” Broyles said.
Before the first game, perhaps the most important thing is the shoes.
Even for days leading up to the trip, players inundate the equipment office with requests for new shoes, different shoes, laces and just about anything else that comes along with footwear.
“For the first game, the shoes are a big issue,” Broyles said. “After that, the shoes really aren’t an issue any more.”
But, now that the Gorillas have hit the road and have everything but the actual game and return trip remaining, things will get a lot easier as the season progresses for Broyles.
“It is intense, but after that first game, even the road trips do get easier,” Broyles said.
That’s not to say that one couldn’t catch Broyles trying to take what small breaks he could throughout the day Friday before the team bus departed for Edmond.
“I did find myself taking a lot of deep breaths,” Broyles said.
