The Mirastar location at 2704 N. Broadway, in front of the Pittsburg Wal-Mart, will no longer be in service as of Friday.
Signs are posted at the gas pumps that the station will be closing as of Aug. 15. An employee of The Morning Sun who tried to purchase a gas card at Wal-Mart was told Wal-Mart doesn’t “do gas cards anymore”.
Mirastar is a brand name that is operated by Tesoro, a gas company based in San Antonio.
Sarah Simpson, spokesperson for Tesoro, said the company could not give specifics on the decision, but said it was “a business decision.”
This is not the only Mirastar location in the shadow of Wal-Mart that Tesoro will be closing down.
“We started with Wal-Mart in 2000 to build Mirastar stations at 76 locations. We are closing 42 of those stores,” Simpson said. “We will continue to operate at the other 34 locations.”
A phone number listing for the Pittsburg location was not picked up despite numerous calls.
The gas station was unmanned and lights were out at the station when attempts were made to speak to someone at the store.
By Wednesday afternoon, the price of gas at the Mirastar was below other area gas stations.
