Mae Watt had all four of her sons spent overnight June 24 at her home. Delton Watt Jr., Bill Watt, Tom Watt and Allen Watt gathered around her dinner table.

Rose Campbell and all other women were given potted plants as they were leaving Mothers Day services at the Arcadia Christian Church. She planted hers in her Pittsburg flower garden and it grew many more blossoms. She called to give her thanks to the committee that was so thoughtful on this special day.

Mitzi and Joel Ray, Tulsa, Okla., have announced the birth of a son, Ryan Ray, on June 26. Local grandparents are Vickie and Larry Shead, Garland. Great-grandparents are Shirley Applegarth, Tulsa, and Mary V. Shead, Arcadia. The Ray grandparents live in Texas. In celebration, the three local Sheads visited that afternoon in Tulsa with the baby, his brother, Cademon and sister Atalie. Other near relatives enjoying dinner together were Maria and Clayton Whitson and Shirley Applegarth. On the way back to Kansas, the Sheads saw the devastation caused by the Joplin tornado.

Sixteen friends attended the Arcadia High School Our Gang carry-in dinner June 25 at  the Arcadia Community Center. While Howard and Louise Holland were at the meeting, his mother, Ruth Holland, Lamar, Mo., had supper, visited on the porch and later played many games of Dominoes with her friend, Mary V. Shead.

Betty and Lou Dehn visited her parents in north Missouri on Father’s Day and went to a Columbia, Mo., hospital to visit their grandson, Landon Long, who was a patient.
Mae Watt’s great-grandson, Dawson Watt, who plays for the Liberty Bombers baseball team, played in a USSSA-AA Baseball Tournament in Branson. The team was undefeated in the tournament and won the state championship.  It is the No. 1 team in USSA-AA baseball for 10-year-olds in Missouri, and is ranked 15th in the nation.

Emory Briggs notified his Arcadia friends of the death of his sister, Barbara Briggs Conduff, on June 19, 2011. A celebration of her life will be held sometime during the Fourth of July weekend in Liberal, Mo.

JOY Sunday School Class met June 20 with 13 present for the carry-in dinner and business session. It was announced that the July date for Bible School will be set later.

Vera Parrish, secretary, entertained with clever sayings at the close of the business meeting. Patty Peterson, president, first had a Bible quiz, and Carol Bridgewater was the champion in knowing the answers. JOY members extended their thanks to friends who are helping with saving Best Choice UPCs. The women are planning to paper, paint and fix up the parsonage kitchen this summer. Wayne and Christie Parrish invited JOY Class to meet at their country home July 18 for a cookout, weather permitting. Others present were Austin and Alanis Sprague, Courtney, Pat and Cathy Allen, Gary Peterson, David Bridgewater, John and Wayne Parrish and Mary V. Shead. The president closed with the quote, “When you flee temptation, don’t leave a forwarding address.”

Virginia Smith, Arcadia High School Alumni Association president, has told friends that a member and graduate, Mitch Miles, was at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Joplin, when the tornado hit on May 22. He and Anne were able to get out without any injuries and he was then taken to a Carthage hospital to spend a few more days. He is now back home. They lost their car and all their personal items they had at the Joplin hospital.

Forrest and Ernestine Berkey, accompanied by Angela, Bill and Bethany Redd and friend Kevin Wilson, attended Kristen Redd’s graduation in Frontenac. Afterward they had dinner at Jim’s Steak House. A celebration dinner was held the following Sunday at the home of the graduate’s grandmother, Mimi Redd, Pittsburg. The next Sunday a cookout was held in the home of Bill Redd with relatives and many of the graduate’s friends.
