At the request of Crawford County treasurer Joe Grisolano, Crawford County commissioners authorized county counselor Jim Emerson to start foreclosure proceedings against property owned by delinquent tax payers.

“There are 94 parcels with a total of $176,256.88 in taxes due on them,” Grisolano said. “They have delinquent taxes from 2009 on.”

He said that this was down 15 parcels from last year, with $90,000 less in taxes owed.

When asked by commissioners if there could be a tax sale of the properties, Grisolano said it would take at least a year before these parcels could be put in a sale.

“In the fourth year of delinquent taxes you can put the property on sale,” the treasurer said, noting that it would be possible to sell property delinquent from 2006 and 2007.

Property owners wishing to prevent foreclosure on these parcels would need to pay at least the 2009 property taxes.

“But if a property is foreclosed, then the owner must pay all the delinquent taxes and court fees to retain the property,” Emerson said.

In other business, commissioner Carl Wood said that he and Greg Hite, county barn foreman, had looked over some used equipment that the Kansas Department of Transportation will be selling.

The commission approved exploring this option, providing the equipment can be purchased economically.

“This could be a good addition to our fleet,” said commissioner Linda Grilz. “One of the pieces would replace an older, aging piece of equipment we have, and the other would be a spare.”
