The filing deadline for state and federal elections in Kansas will have to wait until after the redistricting issue is solved by the court system. But the local election filing deadline has already passed, and most county races have likely already been decided.

In fact, the only contested primary will be for the District 2 county commission seat, which has three Democrats running and no Republicans in the race. Incumbent Linda Grilz will attempt to hold onto her seat against former county commissioner Tom Moody and fellow Democratic challenger Tim A. Gintner. That seat will be determined by the primary, likely some time in August, depending upon the results of the redistricting trial.

Don Pyle and Joe Grisolano are running unopposed to retain their seats as county clerk and treasurer, respectively, while Tom Sighel is the only person in the race to replace the retiring Jeanette Nepote as Register of Deeds. Current Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Peak will be unopposed in his attempt to move up with the announced retirement of Sheriff Sandy Horton.

The only other contested race for a county-wide seat is for County Attorney, in which incumbent Republican Michael Gayoso Jr. will face a general election challenge from Democrat Angela Trimble.

Others have filed for township treasurer, trustee and precinct committee races.

As for the state and federal elections, it is unknown when the courts will decide the state’s redistricting lines. The Legislature’s failure to reach a deal has already pushed back the filing deadline from June 1 to an uncertain point in the future, with the August 7 primary in limbo if a decision has not been made within a few weeks.

“We’ll see what happens with the representatives and senators. We could end up with a race there,” said Liz Hart, Crawford County Director of Election Services.
