The Fourth of July baby contest, scheduled at the J.J. Richards Band Dome in Lincoln Park, had to be moved to Lincoln Center because of morning rains, but that didn’t hurt attendance at all.
“I think we had in excess of 80 children in here, plus parents and grandparents,” said Jeff Wilbert, Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Department director, who served as master of ceremonies. “The place was packed.”
“We’re lucky we have this facility to bring in everything out of the rain,” added Kim Vogel of the Parks and  Recreation staff.
Boys and girls competed separately in age categories from 6 to 12 months, 12 to 24 months and 24 to 36 months. Trophies were awarded to the top three winners in each division.
Most of the winning infants either ignored their trophies or tried to chew on them, but Miles Eslinger, first place winner in the boys 24-36 month division, was thrilled with his.
“I got a trophy!” he said, and began playing with it.
His mother, Nancy Thoennes, said Miles was very enthusiastic about the event.
“He went up on stage five times, and I had to chase him off,” she said.
Leah Caskey, in her first contest, placed first in the girls 6-12 month division.
“Baby contests are a family tradition,” said her mother, Miranda Caskey, Pittsburg.
Many of the entrants were dressed in red, white and blue, including Trinity Fiechtl, daughter of Tabatha and Eric Fiechtl, who wore a unique white tunic and pantaloons with red and white trim.
“I bought it on e-Baby,” said her mother.
Baby contest winners were as follows: Girls 6-12 Months, Leah Caskey, first, daughter of Miranda and Joey Caskey, Allyson Gay, second, daughter of Ricky Gay and Alicia Gay, and Lillian Young, third, daughter of Amanda Glenn and Justin Young; Boys 6-12 Months, Brett Davis, first, son of Brandon and Sarah Davis, Camden Ishimura, second, son of Franklin and Melanie Ishimura, and Jace McCready, third, son of Brittney Main and Kane McCready; Girls 12-24 Months, Breck Slaughter, daughter of Amber and Jason Slaughter, Eleanor Miller, second, daughter of Dave and Kim Miller, and Mercedes Burns, third, daughter of Tamika and Travis Burns; Boys 12-24 Months, Luke Grisolano, first, son of Brian Grisolano and Chelsey Bowers, Anthony Schremmer, second, son of Tony and Johnna Schremmer, and Jaycee Patterson, third, son of Jami and Doug Patterson; Girls 24-36 Months, Haley Oehme, first, daughter of Chris Oehme, Ayla Booe, second, daughter of Travis and Valli Dawn Booe, and Alyvia Moss, third, daughter of Kathie and Nathan Moss; and Boys 24-36 months, Miles Eslinger, first, son of Nancy Thoennes, Caden Deringer, second, son of Stephanie and Jason Deringer, and Brodie Doubledee, son of Tomi and Brett Doubledee.
