In the news: One good thing resulted from Hurricane Isaac: thousands of nutria, aka swamp rats, were killed in the storm. The giant rats are an invasive species that is wreaking havoc on the Gulf Coast shoreline, and officials were pleased to see the rodents killed. The cleanup, however, didn’t please officials: Some of the bloated animals exploded when they were picked up.

Happening today: The Democratic National Convention continues today in Charlotte, N.C.

Opening bell: The Dow Jones opened at 13,035.94; it finished down 54.90‎ points Tuesday.

Motivational quote: “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” - George Eliot

Watercooler talk: Raw video: Zoo shows off rare white tiger cubs

Three rare Indian white tigers were on public display Monday at the Liberec Zoo in the Czech Republic. They are rare in the wild because they stand out in the jungle, hindering their efforts to catch prey.
