The word “wonderful” gets quite a workout when Pam Hightower, event chairman, talks about the 30th anniversary Fort Scott Good Ol’ Days, which starts activities today and continues Saturday and Sunday.

“It is wonderful,” she said. “We have more vendors than ever this year, so many that we had to open up two extra streets to house them all.”

Hightower added that the vendors are first rate, offering everything from hand-carved olive wood from Jerusalem to more traditional crafts including barn wood and lots of jewelry.

“We have arrowhead jewelry and Indian trade bead jewelry that has history behind it,”  Hightower said.

As for the food vendors, they’re wonderful, too.

“You can just eat your way through the Good Ol’ Days,” she said. “And we’ve got a wonderful carnival, Pride Amusements, that’s so large we have it at two locations, on North National and at Wall and State.”

The carnival will run from 6 to 11 p.m. today, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

There’s also wonderful entertainment, including Bob Kitsmiller and the Backwoods Kuzins from Arcola, Mo., doing bluegrass and country, Rusty Rierson, and Wade Henry, a multi-talented juggler, unicyclist, rope walker, fire eater, equilibrist, magician, speaker and comic.

“The Red Garter Theater, which is a favorite every year, will be at the Liberty Theatre,” Hightower said. “We’ve got quite a show planned.”

The celebration will be dedicated this year to Becky Weddle, a founding member of the Good Ol’ Days who also served as its president. She died in October.

Grand marshals in the Good Ol’ Days parade at 6 p.m. today will be the families of Weddle and of the late Tony Fleeman, a City of Fort Scott employee who was also an integral part of making the celebration a success.

Other activities today include bed races at 7 p.m. at First and Main, the fourth annual wiener dog races at 7:30 p.m. at Wall and Main, Red Garter show at 7:30 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre, classic country show at 8 p.m. at Memorial Hall with Tony Juarez, Dave Owens, Jamie Ogle and winner of the Thursday Fort Scott Idol competition, a street dance from 8 to 11 p.m. at Skubitz Plaza featuring country singer J.R. Woods and a teen street dance from 8 to 11 p.m. at the First Street State with KSYN 92.5.

Saturday activities will include arts, crafts and food from Main to Skubitz Plaza  from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., dragoon races at Frary Field at 8 a.m, Dave Regan Memorial Softball Tournament at 8 a.m. at Ellis Park, a baby contest at 10 a.m. at Memorial Hall, Strut Your Mutt Dog Contest at 9 a.m. at Wall and Main,  Wade Henry Show at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.  on Skubitz Plaza.
