Pittsburg State University students Monday evening learned how they can overcome obstacles and be successful during a speech at the Overman Student Center.

The students listened to a speech by motivational speaker Andres Lara, aka “The Cuban Guy.” His story, he said, began when he escaped from Cuba in 1994 at the age of 16. He arrived in the United States without his parents, with no money and unable to speak English. For a while, he was homeless.

According to his website, Lara graduated with honors from Montclair State University with a degree in speech communication and a minor in creative writing. He has authored several books, including “Inspire The Sleeping Giant Within,” “How To Stay Motivated During Difficult Times” and “The Finish Line.”

Lara is the CEO of A. Success Training, the former president of Inspiration Magazine, and has been speaking around the country for 10 years.

“Speaking is my passion,” Lara said, adding that one of his professors gave him the one acronym he needed to remember to succeed in life: GOYA, or Get Off Your Anatomy and take action.

“You can want all you want, but unless you GOYA and take action, nothing is going to happen,” Lara said.

Lara said it is important to not get used to getting knocked down and having to get back up, because it’s easy to lose focus and become complacent.

“What’s more painful, moving forward or turning back?” Lara said. “If you turn back, you will always have to live with two word: ‘What if?’”

Lara also told the students about the importance of shedding dead weight and not letting others dictate your actions. He also spoke of the importance of positive self-talk.

“Move forward, with or without,” Lara said. “That sends a message that you’re serious about success.”
