PITTSBURG —
Southeast Kansas Symphony will perform its first concert of 2012 at 3 p.m. today in Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.
Titled “Four Solos and a Symphony,” the program will feature the four winners of the 2011 Pittsburg State University Concerto Aria Competition.
The program will start with the overture to Verdi’s “La forza del destino,” followed by the Concerto Aria winners.
They are Josh Tidd, who will perform “Concerto for Alto Trombone” by Wagenseil; Kimberly Arzoian, soprano, who will sing “Vissi d’Arte” from Puccini’s “Tosca”; Ernesto Estigarribia, who will perform “Romance for Viola and Orchestra, Op. 85” by Max Bruch; and Alheli Aranda Britez, who will play “Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 102” by Dmitry Shostakovich.
Following intermission, the symphony will perform “Symphony No. 92” by Joseph Haydn, a piece that director/conductor Selim Giray said is often referred to as the “Oxford Symphony” because the composer reportedly conducted it at a ceremony in 1791 in which he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Oxford University.
Haydn was so proud of this honor that, for the rest of his life, he signed himself as “Doctor du Oxford.”
The final concert of the season will be at 3 p.m. on April 22. The guest soloist will be Mary Fukushima, and the event will feature the world premiere of “Flying White” by Forrest Pierce.
Concert tickets will be available at the door at a cost of $7 for adults and $5 for students aged 13-18 and for persons 65 and older. PSU students will be admitted free with student ID.
