The Pittsburg Parks and Recreation department will hold a broad selection of events to celebrate the Fourth of July in and around Lincoln Park and the Four Oaks Golf Course Tuesday and Wednesday.

The department started the holiday celebrations Saturday with a disc golf tournament at the Lincoln Park disc golf course, a golf scramble at Four Oaks Golf Course and a tennis tournament at the Johnson Tennis Complex.

Events this year are similar to years past, with the addition of polka dancing from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Shelter No. 3. In Lincoln Park, there are 40 registered craft vendors and 10 food vendors, which will be open beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“The number is up from last year,” said Parks and Recreation director Kim Vogel.

Two college summer baseball teams, the Joplin Outlaws and the Nevada Griffins, will play a game for the Tyler Jeck Memorial Foundation at JayCee Ball Park on Tuesday evening. Mike’s Amusements will open at 6 p.m. The Tailgatorz will play at the J.J. Richards Band Dome from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and the Shane Duling Band will take the stage from 8 to 9:30 p.m.

The activities begin start back up Wednesday with a 5K run at 7:30 a.m. at Four Oaks Golf Course, and a fishing derby at the pond near the tennis courts. Crafts open at 8 a.m.

Tailwind Cyclist is sponsoring a bike ride at 9 a.m., starting from Lincoln Center, and the Rollin’ Nostalgia Car Show begins at 9 a.m. on McNally Drive in the Don Gutteridge Sports Complex. Registration for the baby contest begins at 9:30 a.m. and the contest is from 10 a.m. to noon.

Registration for the horseshoe tournament starts at 9 a.m. at the Four Oaks Complex, with the event beginning at 10 a.m. Registration for the youth bocce tournament starts before 9:30 a.m. at the info booth, and the tournament begins at 11 a.m.

In the afternoon, Building Blocks of Fun, featuring 10,000 building blocks, starts at 1 p.m. at Shelter No. 3. Registration for the adult bocce tournament begins at 12:30 p.m. at the info booth, and the tournament starts at 1 p.m. There will be a free swim from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Pittsburg Aquatic Center, and the dog show begins at 4 p.m. at Shelter No. 3 — contestants should register before 1 p.m. at the info booth.

There is a hot-dog eating contest sponsored by Freddy’s Frozen Custard and 99.1 FM from 6 to 7 p.m. at the band dome, and a hot air balloon glow from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Area 51 will play at the band dome from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and 33 1/3 will play from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

The fireworks display is scheduled to start at 10 p.m.

“Because it’s during the week, we hope that we’ll have more citizens stay in town and enjoy the festival,” Vogel said.
