If you’re 14 or 15 years old and plan to operate a tractor of over 20 PTO horsepower for someone other than your parents, there will be a certification course for you Saturday, February 23, 8:30 a.m., at the Ag Services Building Meeting Room, 410 Peter Pan Road, Independence, Kansas. For more information, contact the Wildcat Extension District Independence Office, 620-331-2690.
To receive written information, registration before February 15 is encouraged. Fee for course will be $15, which includes snacks, materials, and lunch.
Since 1970, certain agricultural tasks have been declared as hazardous for young people under the age of 16 by the U.S. Department of Labor. The goal of the 4-H Tractor Safety Course is to certify 14 and 15 year olds, so they can legally be employed as tractor operators. Young people under the age of 14 may attend but will not receive certification. Even though anyone 16 and older is legally exempt, inexperienced tractor operators (particularly non-farm background spouses) are welcome to attend. Participants need not be 4-H members to attend.
Course participants should have some basic tractor operation knowledge for the class.
To be certified, class participants must pass a written exam and complete tractor orientation with an adult instructor, either parent or employer.
Certification is not an indication of the young person’s tractor operating ability.
