The case of Tia Lisa Lynn Mapes, a Weir woman arrested for five counts of cruelty to animals after five ferrets were found at her past residence, has been dismissed without prejudice by the Crawford County Attorney’s Office.
The motion to dismiss was filed by Justen Phelps, assistant Crawford County attorney, on Aug. 14. Phelps declined to comment on the story.
Mapes was booked into the Crawford County Jail after a Pittsburg Police Officer pulled over her vehicle. The officer was aware of a local Pittsburg warrant for unlawful harboring of a pit bull, and Mapes was placed under arrest after the officer learned she had other warrants, including one out of Iola and seven warrants in Crawford County District Court.
Those warrants were for five counts of cruelty to animals and two counts of failure to appear,
The cruelty to animals charges stemmed from a report taken by the Pittsburg Police Department on April 17, at 306 W. Seventh, a past residence of Mapes.
Five ferrets were located dead in the residence after she moved out months earlier. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
