As part of a mock natural disaster, Pittsburg State University will have a simulated evacuation.

Today, the Crawford County Disaster Emergency Management Committee will test its incident and response plans in a mock natural disaster. Area police and fire units as well as the Crawford County Sheriff’s department will respond to a mock severe weather event of a tornado hitting Crawford County that will have damage that would potentially force the evacuation of Pittsburg State.

Via Christi and Labette Health will also use the mock disaster to address how the situation will increase the need for medical attention from doctors and nurses.

“The disaster drill gives Crawford County agencies a chance to work together to assess a situation, form an Incident Command Team and manage the incident from the very beginning,” said Karry Moore, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Southeast Kansas Hospitals. “A drill of this nature keeps these agencies aware of what they need in times of disaster, and ultimately that means it’s keeping the people of southeast Kansas safer.”

Members of local media will also participate in a mock press conference about the incident and information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relating to the mock natural disaster will also be available.
