In his first policy statement since outlining his “Road Map for Kansas,” GOP gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback focused on the state’s economy.

During a press conference in Wichita Tuesday, Brownback said that two of the measurable goals of his “Road Map” centered on growing the Kansas economy.

His Democrat challenger, state Sen. Tom Holland still hammered the plan by saying there are no real specifics to Brownback’s plan, especially how it will be paid for.

Brownback said that his plan will focus on pursuing new economic opportunities to increase growth, especially in the aviation industry.

“Like the rest of the economy, this industry has gone through a major downturn since the fall of 2008 with a reduction of some 13,000 jobs in Kansas alone,” Brownback said. “I spoke recently on the U.S. Senate Floor about the need for Congress to fully engage the competition and pursue all means necessary to ensure that this industry is not injured through the illegal actions of foreign governments and their treasuries.”

The press conference came just one day before he and running mate, state Sen. Jeff Colyer, begin a four-day statewide tour that is expected to cover more than 1,000 miles.

Holland campaign manager Dana Houle said that the question still remains on how Brownback would pay for his “Road Map for Kansas.”

“When somebody tells you they want to do something, but won’t tell you ‘how’ they plan to do it, it should raise some serious red flags,” Houle said. “The only way Brownback could pay for his new government programs is to put public schools on the chopping block.”

He said that Holland’s plan for economic growth centers on creating jobs and investing in education and workforce training.

“They will carefully manage the budget so that public safety and our most vulnerable Kansans are never put in jeopardy,” Houle said. “And they will work in a bipartisan fashion to make government more efficient, transparent and responsive to Kansans.”

On the other hand, Brownback said that he would also focus on reforming the state’s tax code.
“Capital and jobs flee to states with low overall tax rates and the right mix of taxes,” Brownback said.
Holland has challenged Brownback to 10 debates across the state. The Brownback campaign has agreed to one debate thus far, on Sept. 11 at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.
