Participants in the Corporate Challenge got all wet Tuesday, and not just because events centered around the Pittsburg Aquatic Center.

A light rain went on for most of the third evening of the annual event. Along with it came much cooler temperatures.

“Kim Vogel and I were talking, and this is probably the coldest Corporate Challenge we’ve had,” said Sara Mitchell, Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Department recreation superintendent.

The cooler temperatures were good, she said, until the rain started.

“We’ve still had a pretty good turnout,” Mitchell said. “The parking lot is packed.”

The five events planned Tuesday were water balloon sand volleyball played with beach towels, a mammoth slide race, board room (a trivia game played on a diving board), collecting plastic cows along the lazy river and a one-mile walk around the park.

“I went out today and marked out the course,” Mitchell said. “The walk usually brings out a lot of people, but maybe not tonight because of the rain.”

However, the rain didn’t stop Leslie Harris, who was walking with daughter Quorynn, and said that her husband B.J. Harris was also around, making it a family event.

“When I worked at Names and Numbers, I ran the Corporate Challenge,” Harris said.

Now she’s public relations director for the Southeast Kansas Humane Society, which isn’t in the challenge.

“I’m happy I can participate as a member of the Pittsburg Area Young Professionals,” Harris said.

Kris Sherry, participating as part of the Watco team, competed in the board room trivia contest. With each incorrect answer, contestants moved a step back on the board, until finally they plunged into the pool.

However, there were exceptions.

“They were very nice and didn’t make us go in the pool if we didn’t want to,” Sherry said. “They were merciful. I think only one guy has gone in so far.”

The idea of the Corporate Challenge is for people to get to know each other outside their work setting, and to become acquainted with those in other corporations and organizations.

Megan Combs of Pitsco Education said she thinks the event achieves that aim.

“It brings the community together,” she said during a lull in her sand volleyball game. “Our CEO, Harvey Dean, is dedicated to the community.”

Sherry also feels the event is successful, despite less than ideal weather.

“I think this is a great turnout,” she said. “The community has made this a very nice event for people to get together and know each other.”

The Corporate Challenge will conclude today. Weather will not be an issue because everything will be indoors at Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium with “meeting the deadline” events, pool hockey and a magic carpet ride.

“We’ll start downstairs, and also have our potluck dinner,” Mitchell said. “Then we’ll go upstairs to the auditorium and have synchronized dry swimming on the stage to the Beach Boys song ‘I Get Around’.  Costumes and props are encouraged, and it could get pretty wild.”
