Eleven people were rescued after what Pittsburg State officials called an ‘elevator malfunction’ at Carnie Smith Stadium Saturday night.
Members of the Pittsburg Fire Department were dispatched to the east end of the stadium at around 8 p.m. Saturday where they discovered that 11 people were trapped in an elevator.
“We went to the second floor and used ladders to get to where the elevator was stuck,” said PFD Capt. Jim Radell.
Radell said that firefighters were able to reach the stuck elevator, which was located between the first and second floor of the stadium.
From there, he said they reached those in the elevator and used ladders to bring them out.
According to the Pittsburg State Police Department, those in the elevator were trapped for approximately 1 1/2 hours.
Pittsburg Fire were dispatched to the scene four hours after the Pittsburg State football team defeated Chadron State, 41-13 at the stadium.
The incident remains under investigation by the Pittsburg State Police Department.
