The Pittsburg Summer Kicks Band will hold a free summer jazz concert at 7 p.m. Sunday on the Pittsburg State University Oval.
The concert will last approximately one hour.
The Pittsburg Summer Kicks Band was first formed in 1997 by Bob Kehle, a member of the faculty in PSU’s Department of Music. Kehle said he formed the band in order to give area musicians an opportunity to play in a big-band jazz setting. Members of the band come from throughout the area and give their time and energy to play for the fun and the joy of making music.
Sunday’s concert will include both big band classics and contemporary big band jazz. The program includes the Basie classic “April in Paris” and Ellington’s “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be” and “In a Mellow Tone.” Also on the program is a Latin tune called “Samba Dees Godda Do It,” a blues tune called “Pig-Lickin’ Blues,” and other works such as Les Brown’s “Leap Frog,” Thad Jones’ “Don’t Get Sassy” and a special feature of Dr. Russell Jones on Earle Hagen’s “Harlem Nocturne.”
Concertgoers should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, PSU officials said. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Kelce auditorium.
