Count another score for the area as the fried chicken capitol of Kansas.
After more than eight weeks of voting and 13,861 votes, Crawford County Fried Chicken was named one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas Cuisine. The Kansas Sampler Foundation, which conducted the voting, referenced six restaurants that “have made the county legendary for fried chicken,” including Chicken Annie’s, Chicken Mary’s, Pichler’s Chicken Annie’s, Gebhardt’s Chicken and Dinners, Barto’s Idle Hour and Chicken Annie’s Girard.
The chicken restaurants were the only southeast Kansas restaurants to make the cut to the final eight, though Josie’s Ristorante in Scammon was among the round of 24.
The other winners include: Bobo’s Drive In, Topeka; Brookville Hotel, Abilene; Cozy Inn, Salina; Free State Brewing Company, Lawrence; Guy & Mae’s Tavern, Williamsburg; Hays House 1857 Restaurant & Tavern, Council Grove; and Wheatfield’s Bakery Cafe, Lawrence.
The Kansas Sampler Foundation received more votes for the cuisine portion than any of the other eight wonders, including commerce, 9,805 votes; art, 9,149 votes; and architecture, 8,036. Out of the nearly 14,000 votes cast, 11,200 were made online.
