Ed. note: Each week during the primary campaign, U.S. Senate candidates and current U.S. House members Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt have been invited to submit a weekly blog. The following is from Tiahrt:
I have the honor and privilege of appearing before the people of Southeast Kansas this Saturday, May 1st, 2010. This will be the first debate in the Kansas Federation of College Republicans’ “Ten in ’10 Debate Challenge’ which was issued to both U.S. Senate candidates and features ten debates before Election Day.
Debates are an essential part of the open election process. They allow voters the benefit of seeing firsthand the candidate’s differences in both issues and personality. For far too long, statewide politicians have overlooked Southeast Kansas and the important contributions the people and businesses of this region bring to our state. I believe as a candidate for statewide office it is my duty to represent all four corners of our diverse state equally – no matter the political calculations and vote counts. My opponent’s campaign even went so far as to say they “did not consider Southeast Kansas a top priority for this sort of forum.” That is just not the way we do things in Kansas.
This blatant disregard for an entire region is unacceptable, and I hope Jerry is present on Saturday to explain his campaigns decision to snub the voters of Southeast Kansas.
Even now, my opponent has not yet accepted this opportunity to stand before the people of Southeast Kansas and answer for his record. I can only hope he will meet me on the stage Saturday and afford the voters of South East Kansas the opportunity to make their decision based on personal interaction with the candidates and not 30 second television spots.
Please join me at Pittsburg State University on Saturday, May 1st at 12:00 p.m. to participate in this important event. I am honored to stand before the people of Southeast Kansas, and I look forward to a spirited debate.
