The Pittsburg High School tennis squad continued its solid play with a first-place finish at the Coffeyville Invitational on Tuesday.

“In varsity play, we played exceptionally well towards the end,” Pittsburg head coach John Seal said. “Our singles players both really came through. Our doubles are getting better, both No. 1 and No. 2 are 13-3 for the year.”

Hank Cloninger and Brandon Smith both took home first place in singles.

Cloninger defeated Iola 8-3, Coffeyville 8-7 (5), Chanute 8-4 and Parsons 8-5 for the grand prize in No. 1 singles.

Smith extended his undefeated record in No. 2 singles to 16-0 on the season and he outpointed his four opponents Tuesday night by a combined 32-6. He beat Iola 8-0, Coffeyville 8-1, Parsons 8-3 and Chanute 8-2.

No. 1 doubles Sean Perkins and Jake Cloninger lost to Coffeyville 8-4 and No. 2 doubles Kaleb Konek and Jake Creech lost to Coffeyville 8-7 (3), the only blemishes on an otherwise perfect night. Both doubles teams placed second.

Pittsburg now owns a 13-3 record and two tournament titles.

The Pittsburg JV finished in a second-place tie at the Parsons Invitational on Monday, one point behind tournament champion Independence.

Adrian McAfee took second place in No. 1 singles, Seth Nemecek third place in No. 2 singles, Kevin McNay and Josh Dial third place in No. 1 doubles and freshmen Micah Hashman and Nick Powers won first in No. 2 doubles.

Team results (Coffeyville Invitational): Pittsburg 13, Coffeyville 13, Parsons 10, Chanute 3, Iola 1.

Team results (Parsons JV Invitational): Independence 25, Pittsburg 24, Parsons 24, Chanute 14, Coffeyville 12, Columbus 10, Labette County 3, Fort Scott 2.
