Nancy Scott, Pittsburg, was presented with the Dick Wintermote Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award Sept. 29 by the University of Kansas Alumni Association.

The award was presented during the second annual Hawkstock family event, held at the KAMO Ranch, Mulberry, with more than 130 attending for fried chicken, music by the band Area 51, inflatable games for children, a silent auction and a program featuring KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little.

Also making appearances were Larry Keating, KU assistant athletics director, and former Jayhawk broadcaster Max Falkenstein.

Hawkstock was organized by Reed and Jill Miller, Henry Menghini and Scott, with help from the Tri-State Chapter board.

A Jayhawk Society member of the KU Alumni Association and KU ambassador, Scott has volunteered for the Tri-State Chapter since its inception in 2006 and recently completed a three-year term as president.

She has coordinated KU activities in southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri and northeastern Oklahoma. For the past 11 years Scott and husband Michael Brewer have co-hosted the Kansas Honors Program in Pittsburg with Rodney and Karen Odgers. A tradition since 1971, this program recognizes the academic excellence of high school seniors in every Kansas county.

A 1971 KU graduate with a degree in physical therapy, Scott currently works as a home health therapist for Mercy St. John’s of Joplin, and she has assisted in Joplin’s tornado recovery efforts.

The Dick Wintermote Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership of their local chapters during a one-year period between July 1-June 30. Wintermote, a 1951 KU graduate, served as executive director of the association from 1963 to 1983. His legacy represents the importance of building a strong volunteer network.

The other Wintermote winner this year was Ryan Pfeiffer of the Greater Kansas City Chapter.
