Timbrelee McNair of Girard and Anna Pool of Coffeyville have been terrors on the golf courses of Southeast Kansas all season and of course, both players would find themselves in a first-place tie after 18 holes Monday at the Class 4A state tournament, despite playing in different groups.

McNair, a junior, defeated freshman Pool on the first playoff hole to claim her first state title and become the second Girard girls golfer to win state, joining Beatriz DeOlano (2000 in Class 4-1A). She drained a birdie putt for the win, the same hole she birdied earlier to start her day Monday.

McNair tied her own school record for lowest 18-hole score with a 72 (1-over par Monday) and she won her ninth consecutive tournament after a fourth-place finish at the season-opening Joplin Invitational on the links of Twin Hills. Since then, she’s won at Caney, Girard, Chanute, Galena, Parsons, Crestwood, Garnett, Girard (Regionals) and Hesston (State), breaking her own school records for lowest 9-hole and 18-hole scores, as well as lowest season average.

The state champion led Girard to a third-place team finish, its 369 score five strokes behind Winfield and nine behind host school Buhler. Fellow junior Carly Heatherly medaled, her 88 good for an 11th place tie with Holly Hottinger of Winfield, Maggie Starr of Buhler and Madison Krull of Spring Hill.

Girard also finished third at state in 1988, 2000 and 2005.

McNair and Pool had the two best rounds Monday — better than anybody’s round in 6A at Wichita (Aubrey Judd of Olathe Northwest, 74), 5A at Emporia (Jordan Chael of St. Thomas Aquinas, 74) and 3-2-1A at Cheney (Taylor Alderman of Council Grove, 87).

Team results: Buhler 360, Winfield 364, Girard 369, Topeka Hayden 376, Andale 378, Chanute 395, Goodland 404, Ulysses 409, Jefferson West 416, Colby 417, KC Piper 430, Labette County 448.

Individual medalists: Timbrelee McNair, Girard 72 (+1); Anna Pool, Coffeyville 72 (+1); Taryn Torgerson, Buhler 74 (+3); Brittini Jensen, De Soto 75 (+4); Taylor Hawkins, Andale 79 (+8); Emily Pennington, KC Piper 83 (+12); Maggie Koops, Ulysses 85 (+14); Rhiannon Caldwell, DeSoto 86 (+15); Rachel Eck, Andale 87 (+16); Abby Berthoff, Winfield 87 (+16); Holly Hottinger, Winfield 88 (+17); Maggie Starr, Buhler 88 (+17); Carly Heatherly, Girard 88 (+17); Madison Krull, Spring Hill 88 (+17); Danae Decker, Chanute 89 (+18); Jesse Burtnett, Winfield 90 (+19); Ally West, Jefferson West 90 (+19); Abbie Thelen, Jefferson West 90 (+19); Heidi Sisson, Topeka Hayden 91 (+20); Kyrstie Miller, Holton 91 (+20).
