Weather delays (lightning) ruled the day Saturday in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The Fall Classic at Arrowhead XI saw a delayed kickoff by nearly 50 minutes and another delay early in the first quarter. Central Missouri-Central Oklahoma finished the last three quarters of their Warrensburg, Mo., clash Sunday after only playing the first quarter Saturday.

Missouri Western-Missouri Southern was delayed 56 minutes in St. Joseph. Lincoln-Kearney went through a 3-hour delay in Jefferson City, Mo. Washburn-Truman State was delayed 123 minutes in Topeka. Division I games in the region were impacted — Kansas-Oklahoma State was delayed over a hour in Lawrence and Missouri-Alabama was held over in Columbia, Mo., really the only stopping of the Crimson Tide all day.

Pitt State lost 31-21 to Northwest Missouri in the Fall Classic XI, despite generating more total offense (373-351) and more first downs (25-18), plus winning time of possession (31:18-28:42).

The offensive numbers are skewed toward Pitt State because of three scoring drives: 13 plays, 84 yards and 4:57 in the second, 7, 87 and 2:46 in the third and 13, 75 and 2:43 in the fourth after Northwest Missouri led 31-14. Pitt State generated 246 of its 373 yards on its three scoring drives.

John Brown maintained his NCAA-II lead in all-purpose yardage and moved into No. 2 on the PSU career receiving yards chart, passing Gene Wayenberg, Jr. and now only trailing Ronnie West.

Nate Dreiling led Pitt State with 10 tackles Saturday and his 346 career tackles place him 13 tackles behind No. 5 tackler Andrew Poling (1996-1999). Dreiling has registered at least 10 tackles 22 of 32 career games.

Northwest Missouri punter Kyle Goodburn won MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week, averaging 46.2 yards on his six punts and pinning the Gorillas inside their own 20 three times and inside their own 10 once. James Franklin received consideration for Offensive Player of the Week after his game of 115 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

Central Missouri trailed Central Oklahoma 10-6 after one quarter Saturday and once play resumed Sunday, Central Missouri outscored Central Oklahoma 41-7 for a 47-17 win on Homecoming. Central Missouri quarterback Colter Smith won MIAA Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 329 yards and three TDs on 21-for-35.

Missouri Southern knocked off Missouri Western during a well-played, mostly clean game for both teams: Western committed the only two turnovers of the game and both proved costly for the Griffons late in the game.

Western senior running back Michael Hill no longer leads the nation in rushing after being limited to 53 yards on 14 carries and held out of the end zone by the Lions; Hill now ranks third behind Harvie Tuck of Indiana (Pa.) and Franklyn Quiteh of Bloomsburg.

Southern won its first game against a ranked opponent since 2009 (also Western) and the Lions also defeated Western in 1983 when the Griffons were No. 4 and both schools played in the NAIA.

Lincoln won its first conference game since rejoining the MIAA in 2011 and ended a 16-game losing streak with a 34-27 victory over Nebraska-Kearney. The Homecoming game was moved from traditional Lincoln home field Dwight Reed Stadium to Jefferson City High School in the second half. Lincoln had not won a MIAA game since 1989, when the Blue Tigers defeated former MIAA member Missouri-Rolla, 21-14.

On the field Saturday, Lincoln freshman defensive back Maurkice Savage intercepted three passes, thwarting Nebraska-Kearney scoring opportunities in the red zone, and earned MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. Savage made his third pick with 23 ticks left on the clock and Kearney driving for the winning score as deep as possible in Lincoln territory.

In the other MIAA games, Fort Hays State defeated Southwest Baptist 37-34 in overtime, Washburn defeated Truman State 35-24 and Emporia State blanked Lindenwood 13-0.

Pitt State dropped into a No. 7 tie with Minnesota-Duluth in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Poll; ironically, both schools were ranked 1-2 in the polls for the first month of the season.

Northwest Missouri elevated two spots to No. 5 and picked up a single first place vote. Missouri Western plunged 12 spots from No. 4 to No. 16 after its 31-30 Homecoming loss to Missouri Southern.

Kansas rival schools Emporia State and Washburn are in a tie at No. 18; Emporia State now stands as the only undefeated team in the MIAA and Washburn joins Pitt State, Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western as teams with one loss. Central Missouri falls in the “Others Receiving Votes” category, receiving six points.

MIAA Standings (conference): Emporia State 7-0 (7-0), Washburn 6-1 (6-1), Missouri Western 6-1 (5-1), Northwest Missouri 6-1 (5-1), Pitt State 5-1 (5-1), Central Missouri 5-2 (5-2), Lindenwood 5-2 (4-2), Missouri Southern 5-2 (4-2), Truman State 4-3 (3-3), Fort Hays State 2-5 (2-5), Central Oklahoma 1-6 (1-6), Lincoln 1-6 (1-6), Southwest Baptist 1-6 (1-6), Northeastern State 0-6 (0-6), Nebraska-Kearney 0-7 (0-7).

AFCA Top 10: 1. Colorado St.-Pueblo (7-0), 2. Winston-Salem State (7-0), 3. New Haven (6-0), 4. Bloomsburg (7-0), 5. Northwest Missouri (6-1), 6. Ashland (7-0), 7t. Minnesota-Duluth (6-1), 7t. Pitt State (5-1), 9. Minnesota St.-Mankato (7-0), 10. Ouachita Baptist (6-0).
