The surprise wasn’t that Lyndon, ranked No. 4 in Class 2-1A by one media source, beat Northeast by multiple touchdowns on Friday night.
The surprise was that Northeast scored 8 points and had some passing success on a Tiger defense that had only given up 24 points all season in a 70-8 rout.
Three Lyndon Tigers ended the day with multiple touchdowns — quarterback Joe Walsh, running back Josh Owens, and running back Skyler Farwell. Two ended the game with more than 100 yards rushing: Walsh with 100 exactly on seven carries and Owens with 164 yards on eight carries.
The story of the day was a Lyndon offensive line made up entirely of seniors. That combined experience helped them open up a number of holes for Tiger rushers. All but one of the Lyndon touchdowns were on the ground and the sole passing touchdown didn’t occur until the third quarter.
The Vikings did have a little success on offense on their third drive of the night, which started at the Viking 32. J.T. Richardson hit a leaping Nick Younge over the middle, who then broke a tackle and raced for 26 yards. Two plays later, Killian Willard caught a pass one-handed on an out pattern and turned it into a 27-yard gain of his own down to the Tigers’ 10.
On third down and goal from the 5, the Vikings continued the drive’s passing success by finding Killian Willard in the end zone. Of course, after making 65 of the drive’s 68 yards by throwing the ball, the Vikings threw a short pass to the opposite side and the opposite Willard, with Richardson finding Kegan Willard just inside the goal line for a two-point conversion.
“This was one of our better passing outputs all season,” said Northeast head coach Phil Hobbs. “That’s something we can take away from this game. Our kickoff return team did a much better job this week. Unfortunately, they got a lot of practice, but they made a lot of good blocks and gave us good field position all night.”
The game was also Senior Night for the Vikings, who will see just four seniors graduate at the end of the year: Sammy Brooks, Mike Beasley, Cody Burlingham and Killian Willard. Killian Willard left the game on a stretcher in the second quarter after suffering what Hobbs described as a concussion.
The seniors did their final season proud at home, going 3-1 in front of the home crowd at Nicoletti Field. The Vikings are now 4-4 and will travel to Oswego next week for a potential battle for the Three Rivers League title, as well as a slim possibility at the playoffs.
“We’re still playing for something in week nine, and that hasn’t happened recently,” Hobbs said. “Anything can happen still. We’ll see how things unfold the rest of the season.”
