The City of Girard has a new fire chief.

The Girard City Council voted Monday night to hire Chase D. Waggoner, Lebanon, Mo., as new fire chief. He was interviewed by council members in executive session during a special meeting on Saturday.

The city had been without a fire chief since the termination of the previous chief in April. Waggoner will fill that unexpired term of service which runs until April of 2013.

Waggoner is currently deputy fire chief, chief of EMS and grant administrator for the Eldridge, Mo., Fire Department, and was previously logistics officer/firefighter for the Lebanon Rural Fire Protection District. He holds a National Registered EMT license and is certified as a Fire Officer II, fire service instructor and Firefighter II.

He also served two terms on the Lebanon City Council and is an officer in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Waggoner is a member of the Missouri Association of Fire Chiefs, the Firefighters of Missouri Association and a Life Member of the Missouri Emergency Medical Services Association.

Girard mayor Maurice Harley said that Waggoner was being hired at a salary of $44,500 per year. This will increase to $45,000 after completion of a six-month probationary period.

In other business, the council accepted the architect’s recommendation and approved the low base bid of Tri-State Construction in the amount of $189,900 for remodeling of the Roye building.

However, the council decided to give local business a chance to bid on appliances for the Roye kitchen.

“We also plan on bidding to a separate company for the audio piece in the Roye conference room,” said city administrator Gary Emry.

He also gave an update on work being done at the civic center/senior center at 221 S. Ozark.

“Demolition has been done on the eastern side, it’s down,” Emry said. “It’s protected so the water won’t seep in and now we’re in consideration of putting the wall back in.”

One possibility involves steel siding, which Emry said could be done in-house with city staff.

Parking at the center also needs to be addressed.

“We’ve had an asphalt company come in and look at it and we’re waiting for a bid,” Emry said.  “We had an estimate for the parking piece of $25,000, but I think we can come in under that.”

Council member Sharon Mattson said she hoped that more seniors would begin going to the center.

“It will be such a great thing to have in our town,” she said.

Council member Dave Garrett reported that a recycling dumpster will be placed in Girard by Kenny Shetlar.

“It will be placed east of the Glen Mathis building, on a lot owned by Bob Zagonel,” he said.
